A-Star is born: Suzuki's Concept A-Star hatchback minicar is the harbinger of the next-generation Alto.Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor and its local affiliate, Maruti Suzuki, will unveil the Concept A-Star in early January here at Auto Expo 2008 as the precursor to the next-generation Alto for world markets.The production version of the five-door hatchback is slated to begin assembly at Maruti's Manesar plant in October 2008. Versions of the car are expected to be produced by Suzuki and affiliates at several other global locations, including Japan and China. Cars built in India will also be shipped to Europe and other markets.
The A-Star — so-called because it's positioned in the heart of the A-segment or minicar class — will feature a new 1.0-liter aluminum engine that meets tough Euro 5 emission standards, including drastically lower levels of CO2.
Maruti collaborated on the design and development of the vehicle, and a subsidiary will build the new engine near Manesar.
Suzuki is in the process of expanding total production capacity at Maruti to nearly 1 million units by 2010. The company remains India's largest vehicle manufacturer, commanding more than 50 percent of passenger-car sales.
